The "parade" in this title is a row of buildings, not a procession: South Parade is a street in Matlock, the Derbyshire spa town where the River Derwent cuts through limestone gorge country. The view also takes in the Heights of Abraham, the wooded hill above Matlock Bath that visitors climbed for its overlooks in the late 1800s. The photochrom process behind it was a Swiss color method, in which a black-and-white negative was printed from several hand-prepared stone plates, each inked in a different color. Detroit Publishing Company sold these prints in the United States, and this one is listed in its 1905 catalog of English views.
