South Parade in Herne Bay, a seaside town on the north coast of Kent, is the subject of this view, one of a series of England scenes issued in photochrom color. Herne Bay grew into a popular Victorian resort during the nineteenth century, and its promenades drew holidaymakers from London and elsewhere. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, built each color image from several photographic plates, each inked in a different hue. This example was sold by the Detroit Publishing Company and is listed as print number 11263 in its 1905 catalog.
