South Dakota's state fair parades drew crowds of farm families and town visitors, and this one from 1912 shows the livestock procession that was a central part of the fair's program. Stock parades let breeders display their best animals, from draft horses to cattle and hogs, while spectators judged quality and compared herds. In the early twentieth century, such fairs were among the main places where rural communities saw new breeding methods and equipment, and the parade reflected how much the region's economy rested on livestock. Look closely at the animals and the onlookers along the route to see how the event brought the countryside into town.
