Bognor's New East Parade is a seafront promenade on the Sussex coast, the kind of walk that gave a resort town its character. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that built up vivid prints from several separate printing stones, and it was sold in the United States by the Detroit Publishing Company. The record dates the photograph to between about 1890 and 1900 and lists the print as number 11302 in the company's 1905 catalog of England views. Seaside towns like Bognor drew visitors from London and beyond, and promenades like this one were where they strolled and watched the sea.
