East Parade runs along the seafront at Bognor, the south-coast resort town in West Sussex, and this print captures the promenade as it looked in the 1890s, when the town was growing as a holiday destination for visitors arriving by rail. The color comes from the photochrom process, a Swiss method that layered several hand-prepared lithographic stones over a black-and-white photograph. Detroit Publishing Co. issued the view in its 1905 catalog of English scenes, which made such images popular in the United States. The soft, saturated tones give a sense of the pastel palette that the process was known for.
