Hastings, the East Sussex seaside town, is the place this photochrom print records, with a parade moving through its streets in the years between about 1890 and 1900. The image is a photomechanical print, made by a process that layered several color plates to give a painted look to a photograph. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such views to American travelers and collectors, and this example appears in its 1905 catalog of English scenes under print number 10051. Its tinted colors and crowded street make it a useful record of how a provincial English town presented itself for public celebration at the turn of the century.
