This view was taken from Prospect Hill above Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and looks down on the temporary relief camps and the Wood, Morrell & Co. store and office in the days after the flood of May 31, 1889. The flood followed the failure of the South Fork dam upstream, which released a wall of water down the Conemaugh Valley and killed more than 2,000 people. The photograph was made by Histed of Pittsburgh, who registered it for copyright, and it shows how quickly the city's survivors were housed and supplied amid the wreckage.
