The Cambria Iron Company was the major employer in Johnstown, and this view of its office and storerooms, taken from the Pennsylvania Railroad depot, shows the company's buildings in the flood's aftermath. The South Fork dam failed on May 31, 1889, sending a wall of water down the Conemaugh valley that killed more than 2,000 people and tore through the mills and rail yards. Pittsburgh photographer Histed made the picture and registered it for copyright. Notice how the depot and the debris around the buildings convey the scale of the destruction.
