The view from the Cambria Company store looks across toward the Kernville neighborhood, which places the viewer right in the flood's path. The store belonged to the Cambria Iron Company, the town's largest employer, whose works shaped daily life in Johnstown well before the disaster. On May 31, 1889, the South Fork dam upstream failed and sent a wall of water down the Conemaugh valley, killing more than 2,000 people. Pittsburgh photographer Histed made the view around this time and registered it for copyright, a sign that scenes of the ruin were meant for wide circulation.
