Taken from the Pennsylvania Railroad depot, this view looks across the offices and storerooms of the Cambria Iron Company, the mill concern that employed much of Johnstown, in the aftermath of the flood of May 31, 1889. The photographer, Histed of Pittsburgh, recorded the wreckage left behind after water released by the failed South Fork dam tore through the Conemaugh Valley. The flood killed more than 2,000 people, and the image shows how thoroughly the industrial district that anchored the town was disrupted.
