Taken from Prospect Hill, this view looks down on the relief camps set up after the Johnstown Flood, with the Wood, Morrell & Co. store and office in view below. The flood followed the failure of the South Fork Dam on May 31, 1889, which sent a wall of water down the Conemaugh Valley, killing more than 2,200 people and damaging much of the city. Pittsburgh photographer Histed made the print and registered its copyright that same year, and it shows how quickly temporary shelter took the place of ordinary life in the ruined town.
