From Prospect Hill, the camera looks down on a Johnstown that the flood of May 31, 1889, had just torn apart. The disaster followed the failure of the South Fork dam upstream, which released a wall of water into the Conemaugh valley and destroyed homes, mills and bridges, killing more than 2,000 people. The print was made by the Pittsburgh firm Histed, which registered it for copyright, and it shows how commercial photographers recorded the scale of the ruin for a public eager to see it.
