This view looks across Johnstown toward Kernville, a neighborhood on the far side of the valley, and it captures the town as it appeared in the days after the disaster. On May 31, 1889, a dam on the South Fork of the Little Conemaugh River failed after days of heavy rain, sending a wall of water down the valley that killed more than 2,000 people and destroyed much of the town's mills and homes. Ernest Walter Histed, the photographer credited in the record, recorded the flood's aftermath, and his work helps show how thoroughly the disaster reshaped the city. Look closely at the scattered debris and the tangled timber to gauge the force of the water.
