Taken in the flood's aftermath, this view looks from the Cambria Company's store toward Kernville, a neighborhood of Johnstown whose residents depended heavily on the nearby Cambria Iron Company. The flood on May 31, 1889, followed the failure of the South Fork Dam upstream, which sent a wall of water down the Conemaugh Valley and killed more than 2,000 people. The photograph was made by Histed of Pittsburgh, who copyrighted it, and it offers a rare record of how the mill town looked in the days after the disaster.
