Looking toward Kernville, a riverside district of Johnstown, this view shows the wreckage left when the South Fork dam gave way on May 31, 1889. The torrent that rushed down the Little Conemaugh and Conemaugh valleys flattened houses and swept debris into heaps, and the flood killed more than 2,000 people in the city and surrounding towns. The print was made by Histed, a Pittsburgh photographer, and registered for copyright, which was a common step for commercial views of the disaster. Its clear documentation of the ruined streets makes it a useful record of the flood's destruction.
