Wrecked houses stand in the foreground of this view looking toward Kernville, a neighborhood on the flooded Conemaugh Valley floor. The flood followed the failure of the South Fork Dam upstream on May 31, 1889, when a torrent of water and debris swept down through Johnstown and killed more than 2,000 people. Photographs like this one, made in the weeks after the disaster, document how completely the water flattened ordinary homes and how the wreckage piled up against whatever stood in its path.
