Taken from a point looking south, this view shows a clubhouse in the wreckage left after the Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889, when the South Fork dam above the city gave way and a wall of water swept down the Little Conemaugh and Conemaugh valleys. More than 2,000 people died in the disaster, and the flood left much of the city's lower district in ruins. The print was made by Histed, a Pittsburgh photographer, and registered for copyright, which was common for disaster views that sold widely to newspapers and to the public. Photographs like this one remain some of the most direct records of how completely the water reshaped the town.
