This view records a private house in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, after the flood of May 31, 1889, when the South Fork Dam above the valley gave way and released a torrent down the Conemaugh River. The water swept through the city within hours, killing more than 2,000 people and destroying much of the town's housing and industry. Photographs like this one, taken in the weeks after the disaster, gave the public its first detailed look at the damage. The photographer, Ernest Walter Histed, documented the wreckage in the aftermath.
