Few pictures capture the aftermath of the Johnstown Flood as directly as this view of the Club House and the Morrell Institute, both standing in the wreckage left after the South Fork dam gave way on May 31, 1889. The flood swept down the Little Conemaugh River valley and killed more than 2,000 people, and photographs like this one recorded how the town looked in the days and weeks that followed. Ernest Walter Histed, the photographer credited here, is among the figures whose images helped the country grasp the scale of the disaster.
