Few views of the Johnstown Flood show the ruin as plainly as this one, which looks down at the broken South Fork dam from the roadway above the breach. The dam had been built to hold water for a canal, and by 1889 it belonged to a private sportsmen's club whose members had let its upkeep slide. When heavy rain swelled the lake behind it on May 31, the embankment gave way, and the wall of water that rushed down the Little Conemaugh valley killed more than 2,000 people before it reached Johnstown. Photographer Ernest Walter Histed made this record of the aftermath.
