Taken from the stone arch of the Pennsylvania Railroad bridge, this view looks down on the remains of the Cambria Iron Mills after the South Fork Dam failed on May 31, 1889. The flood that tore down the Conemaugh Valley killed more than 2,000 people and swept away much of Johnstown's industrial core, and the stone bridge caught wreckage piled against its arches. Histed, a Pittsburgh photographer, made the print around 1889 and registered it for copyright. Look closely at the twisted iron and broken buildings to see how thoroughly the mill was destroyed.
