Debris heaped against the Pennsylvania Railroad's stone bridge at Johnstown shows how the flood's wreckage collected at the one structure solid enough to catch it. On May 31, 1889, the failure of the South Fork Dam sent a wall of water down the Little Conemaugh River into the valley town, and houses, rail cars, and timber jammed against the viaduct. The photographer, Histed of Pittsburgh, made this print around 1889, and it remains one of the period's most direct records of a disaster that killed more than 2,000 people.
