Taken from the stone arch bridge of the Pennsylvania Railroad, this view looks across the wreckage of the Cambria Iron Company works at Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in the aftermath of the flood of May 31, 1889. The disaster followed the failure of the South Fork dam upstream, which sent a wall of water down the Conemaugh Valley and killed more than 2,000 people. The bridge became a landmark of the catastrophe because flood debris jammed against its arches and later burned. The print was made by the Pittsburgh photographer Histed and registered for copyright the same year.
