Looking toward Kernville, this general view shows the debris and ruin that the flood left scattered across the Johnstown valley. The disaster followed the failure of the South Fork Dam upstream on May 31, 1889, after days of heavy rain sent a wall of water roaring down the valley and killed more than 2,000 people. The photograph was made by Histed of Pittsburgh and registered for copyright, which suggests it was sold as a commercial view. Notice how little of the town's street pattern survives in the foreground.
