The city hall at 80 Broad Street appears here in a stereograph pair from 1865, a building that stood at the center of a city that had been the scene of the war's opening. Charleston was where the conflict began with the Confederate bombardment of Fort Sumter in April 1861, and by early 1865 Union forces had occupied the city after Confederate troops withdrew. Made as a wet collodion glass negative and issued by the E. & H.T. Anthony firm, the two images were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, which gave home audiences a sense of depth and presence in a place they had read about in the newspapers.
