Tradd Street is one of the oldest streets on Charleston's historic peninsula, and this view records its residential character before the city's preservation movement took hold. Charleston's old houses drew growing attention from visitors and photographers in the early 1900s, as the city was increasingly promoted for its colonial and antebellum architecture. The Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely recording American towns, made the picture on an 8-by-10-inch glass plate negative, a format that captures fine detail in facades, porches and street edges.
