The record names a specific house on Broad Street in Charleston, South Carolina, where Union officers were held while Federal guns shelled the city. In 1863, Confederate authorities moved captured Union officers into buildings within range of the bombardment, a move meant to deter the attacks, and the Union fire went on anyway. The stereograph dates to about 1865, after the siege had ended, and it was issued by E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., a New York firm that sold stereo views of Civil War sites to a wide public. The image shows how the damaged city looked to visitors and buyers in the war's final months.
