The Charleston Custom House, shown here, was a federal building in one of the South's busiest ports, and this color lithograph presents it as a finished civic monument. Edward B. White is credited as constructing architect, while Ammi B. Young, who later served as supervising architect of the Treasury, arranged and designed the view. The building's construction stretched across decades, with work halted during the Civil War and not completed until the late 1870s. The print was made by P.S. Duval & Co., a Philadelphia firm known for its color lithographs, so it reflects the commercial printmaking of the mid-to-late 1800s as much as the building itself.
