The market hall on Market Street in Charleston, built in 1841, has anchored the city's public market for generations. This view, made around 1906 by the Detroit Publishing Company, shows the building as a working marketplace where produce, fish, and goods changed hands. The company traveled widely photographing American towns and scenery, and its glass negatives preserve a record of Southern cities at the turn of the twentieth century.
