Another view of the O'Connor house in Charleston, South Carolina, this stereograph dates to 1865, the year the Civil War ended. Its two glass plates form the left and right halves of a pair, the standard method for stereographs, which gave viewers a sense of depth through a stereoscope. Charleston had been bombarded and partly burned during the war, and Union troops occupied the city in February 1865 after Confederate forces withdrew, so pictures of its houses from that spring show a city in a damaged, transitional state. The pair was published by E. & H.T. Anthony, a New York firm that sold large numbers of stereographs for home viewing.
