The view centers on the lighthouse at Fort Sumter, the brick fort in Charleston Harbor where the Civil War opened with the Confederate bombardment in April 1861. By 1865, after Union forces had taken the city, the harbor and its fortifications had become a place of ruin and occupation, and photographers recorded them for public interest. This picture survives as a stereograph, a pair of images meant to be seen together through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. It was made with the wet collodion process on glass, and the record notes an earlier attribution to Alexander Gardner, a photographer whose name is often linked to Civil War views.
