Few places in the war carry as much weight as Fort Sumter, and this stereograph pair shows its interior in 1865, after Confederate forces abandoned the fort in February as Union armies closed in on Charleston. The fort had been the site of the first shots of the war in April 1861, and years of bombardment had left its walls battered. The two glass plates were made to be viewed together through a stereoscope, which fused them into a single image with depth, a popular format for home viewing at the time. The record once credited the work to Alexander Gardner, but that attribution is now uncertain.
