Inside Fort Sumter, a crowd gathers in the fort's brick interior for the flag-raising of April 14, 1865, exactly four years after the first shots of the Civil War were fired on the harbor's defenses. Major Robert Anderson, whose garrison had lowered the same United States flag when it surrendered in 1861, returned to raise it again. The glass negative was made by the wet collodion process. Its notes say it was once credited to Alexander Gardner, the photographer known for Civil War views, though that attribution is now doubtful.
