The view is taken from the parapet of Fort Sumter on April 14, 1865, the day the old flag was raised over the fort again. That date was no accident: it marked four years to the day since Union forces under Major Robert Anderson had surrendered the fort to Confederate batteries in Charleston Harbor, which opened the Civil War. Photographer James F. Gibson made the image as a stereograph, so the two glass negatives, one for each eye, produce a three-dimensional view when viewed together. Its wet collodion process required the photographer to prepare and expose each plate on the spot, making it a direct record of the ceremony's setting.
