This stereograph shows a photographer standing on the parapet of Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor, the masonry fort where the Civil War opened in April 1861. By 1865 the fort had been battered by years of Union bombardment, and Union forces had reclaimed it in February of that year as Confederate troops left Charleston. The image is a wet collodion glass negative made as a pair of plates, which were viewed through a stereoscope to create a three-dimensional effect. Its rubble-strewn ramparts show how much damage the harbor fortifications had taken during the war.
