The shattered outer wall of Fort Sumter and the chevaux-de-frise, the timber barrier with sharpened spikes meant to repel an assault, set this stereograph apart. The damage dates to the Union bombardment of August 17 to 23, 1863, but the view was made in April 1865, after Confederate forces had left Charleston and Union troops had returned to the harbor. Photographer James F. Gibson recorded it as one half of a stereo pair on wet collodion glass, a format that let viewers see the ruined fort in three dimensions through a parlor viewer.
