Few places carry as much weight in the Civil War as Fort Sumter, and this stereograph records the moment the Union reclaimed it. On April 14, 1865, four years after Major Robert Anderson's garrison surrendered the fort, the American flag was raised over its walls in a ceremony with Anderson and a general the caption identifies as Gillmore, probably Quincy Gillmore, whose campaign had ended Confederate control of the harbor. James F. Gibson made the pair of glass negatives using the wet collodion process, and the two plates were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope to give the scene depth.
