Few images show the east face of Fort Sumter as a stereograph, a matched pair of plates meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The fort stands on a man-made island at the entrance to Charleston Harbor, where the Civil War opened in April 1861 with the Confederate bombardment that forced the Union garrison to surrender. By 1865, after nearly four years of Union bombardment, the walls had been reduced to heaps of rubble, and Charleston itself was evacuated that February. The record once credited the photographer Alexander Gardner, though that attribution is no longer assumed.
