A beacon stands on the parapet of Fort Sumter, the brick fortress in Charleston Harbor where the Civil War opened with the Confederate bombardment in April 1861. This 1865 view survives as two glass negatives that form a stereograph, meant to be seen through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. The photographer is attributed to James F. Gibson, and the wet collodion process he used required plates to be exposed and developed quickly, before the coating dried. By the time the picture was made, Union forces had reclaimed the fort after Charleston was evacuated, so the image shows the site as the war was ending.
