Few places in the Civil War are as recognizable as Fort Sumter, the masonry fort at the mouth of Charleston Harbor where the war's first shots were fired in April 1861. This stereograph shows the fort's interior in 1865, after more than three years of bombardment had reduced much of it to rubble, and after Union troops took the site when Charleston was abandoned that February. Stereographs like this were made as a pair of glass plates so that viewing them through a stereoscope gave a sense of depth. The record notes that the photographer was earlier attributed to Alexander Gardner.
