This stereograph shows the interior of Fort Sumter, the brick fort on an island at the mouth of Charleston Harbor where the war began in April 1861 with the Confederate bombardment that forced the Union garrison to surrender. The image was taken in 1865, after Union forces had retaken the ruined fort in February of that year, and its two glass plates form a left and right pair meant to be viewed together for a three-dimensional effect. The record notes that the photograph was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, a leading Civil War photographer, though that attribution has since been questioned.
