Few places carry more weight in the Civil War than Fort Sumter, the brick fortification on an island at the mouth of Charleston Harbor where Confederate guns opened fire in April 1861. This stereograph shows the fort's interior in 1865, after Union forces returned to the ruins in February as Charleston was abandoned. Made as two glass plates that form a left and right pair, it was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The photograph was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a leading war photographer, but that attribution has since been revised.
