A pair of glass plates makes this view a stereograph, so the two halves show the same interior from slightly different positions and would have been viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. Fort Johnson was a Confederate work in Charleston Harbor, and its batteries took part in the bombardment of Fort Sumter in 1861. By 1865, Charleston had been evacuated and Union forces were moving through the area, so photographers working there recorded fortifications abandoned or taken over during the war's final months. The caption places the fort on Morris Island, and the picture was once credited to Alexander Gardner, though later cataloging has questioned that attribution.
