Fort Putnam on Morris Island, at the southern edge of Charleston Harbor, is the subject of this 1865 interior view, taken as a stereograph pair that was meant to be seen through a viewer for a three-dimensional effect. Morris Island was a Union foothold during the long campaign against Charleston, which had been the first Confederate state capital to secede and was one of the war's most fiercely contested ports. The image was made on a glass negative using the wet collodion process, and the Library of Congress notes that it was once credited to Alexander Gardner, an attribution that has since been revised.
