Fort Putnam on Morris Island was one of the Union works from the long campaign against Charleston, and this view shows its interior in 1865, the last year of the war. The picture survives as a stereograph pair, two glass negatives made with the wet collodion process, which were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope to create a sense of depth. Morris Island had been a Union foothold since 1863, when the assault on nearby Fort Wagner was fought there. The photographer is not firmly identified; Civil War caption books attribute the set to Alexander Gardner, though that attribution has been revised.
