Fort Putnam on Morris Island was one of the Union batteries that bombarded Fort Sumter during the long siege of Charleston, and this stereograph shows the guns inside its earthworks. The caption credits them with firing more than 1,200 shots into Sumter. Made in 1865 as the war was winding down, the view survives as a stereo pair of wet collodion glass plates, so the two slightly offset images create depth when seen through a stereoscope. The photographer is attributed to James F. Gibson, born in 1828.
