The stockade on Morris Island, a low barrier of the island south of Charleston harbor, held Confederate prisoners in the last months of the war, after Union forces had taken the island's defenses in 1863. This picture survives as a stereograph, two nearly identical exposures made from slightly different positions so that a viewer using a stereoscope would see the enclosure in depth. The photographer, James F. Gibson, made the image on a glass negative using the wet collodion process, which required the plate to be coated and exposed before it dried.
