Morris Island, the sandy barrier at the mouth of Charleston harbor, came under Union control in 1863 after the costly fight for Fort Wagner, and this 1865 stereograph shows one of its ordnance depots. The scene survives as two glass negatives that print the left and right halves of a stereo pair, meant to be viewed together for a sense of depth. Wet collodion plates like these were the standard of the period, and earlier records credited the work to Alexander Gardner, an attribution no longer taken for granted. The picture offers a look at the military supply operations that followed the fall of Charleston.
