The caption on this negative identifies the gun as the Swamp Angel, a large Parrott rifle that Union engineers set up in the marsh at Morris Island in 1863 to shell Charleston, which lay several miles away. It burst during firing that summer, but this 1865 view shows the battery site itself and its crew near the end of the war. The negative is a wet collodion glass plate, a process that required photographers to coat, expose, and develop each plate within minutes. The record once credited Alexander Gardner, but that attribution is no longer assigned to this photographer.
