The gun on Morris Island, captioned on its negative sleeve as the Swamp Angel with a question mark beside the name, sets this view apart from other Charleston pictures. That piece was a Union siege gun placed in the marshes in 1863 to shell the city, and it burst after a short firing run that August. The image is a stereograph pair, two glass plates meant to be viewed together for a sense of depth, and it was once credited to Alexander Gardner, a photographer whose name is often linked to wartime views of the South. It shows how the siege was fought as much through engineering in mud and sand as through open battle.
